MADISON TOWNSHIP- The Madison softball team is scheduled to open the 2017 season at home next Monday vs Bucyrus. Rams head coach Tim Niswander welcomes back ten lettermen from a team that finished 17-12 a season ago winning a sectional championship.

"We have ten returning lettermen eight of those were starters we only lost two seniors.  We've got a handful of freshmen Julia Litt will play center field for us.  Leah Boggs will catch and play third.  Mackenzie Nikolaus, Jenna Wigton, Kaya Lunsford those kids are all in a battle at second base, DH, and a bench player spot.  We hope they separate themselves and we can rotate the others back through the bench spot."

The strength of this year's Ram bunch appears to be in the circle and behind the plate.  "Pitching wise and catching wise Egypt Murphy is a returning starter and Cayle Thomas and Mackenzie Mullins have been our two pitchers the last two years they are both returning.  We have one goal here and that's to win every time you step on the field.  If you do that everything takes care of itself."

We need teamwork, we need to talk more, says Murphy.  "Compatability is a real big thing.  I feel like communication is a big thing."

Pitcher Mackenzie Mullins believes getting off to a good start sets the pace for the remainder of the season.  "It's really important because the way you start a season really helps you finish it out.  You don't want to lose your first three games because it will put you in a slump.  If we come out strong we will finish strong."

"We've got a lot of team speed," says Niswander.  We've got kids who lay bunts down and steal bases.  In the past, we've had a couple.  I think we're pretty much that way seven through nine.  We will look different, but I think the kids have been getting in a lot of good work in the gym."

Madison is scheduled to open their conference season next Tuesday also at home vs Lexington weather permitting.
